1. Make Money
Whether you’re thinking about driving for Lyft or Uber part-time or full-time, it can be a great source of income. I currently have a job working at a school, but I use Lyft as a way to cover expenses like my acting school, my car payments, and food. It’s a way for me to be able to save money while I generate income. Whether you are looking for a full-time income or just need some extra money, driving for Lyft or Uber is a great source of income.
2. Meet People
I have never been so surprised by how many fascinating people I have met while driving for Lyft. I’ve met people from many walks of life and many of them have very interesting stories. Meeting new people is one of the best perks of driving for Lyft and Uber and it helps pass the time when you’re having great conversations.
3. It's Easy
This is my favorite one. Unlike many other stressful or labor-intensive jobs, driving for Lyft or Uber is very stress-free. Yes, you are bound to get a passenger here or there that is having a bad day or you might make a wrong turn and get stressed out, but it’s very easy compared to working at a fast-food restaurant, construction, or even retail. It’s an underrated job that’s very simple and easy to do. If it ever gets difficult, you can rest easy knowing that you’re about to drop that passenger off in a few minutes and will never see them again.
4. Make Your Own Hours
One of the greatest perks of being a Lyft or Uber driver is that you can drive on your own schedule. Do you have another job? Do you take a yoga class every morning? Drive on your own schedule when you feel like it. If you want to take a vacation, you don’t need to ask anyone, you just do it. Also, you’ll never have to experience the pain of waking up late and missing a shift. You can always make up the hours by working later that day.
It is becoming more and more common for passengers to tip their Uber and Lyft drivers. When you make a connection with your passenger, they are very likely to tip you. Every time I’ve had a good conversation with a passenger, I get a tip from them. It’s almost 100%. When I look at my individual ride payments and see that I received a tip, I immediately remember who that person was and why I got that tip. I’ve found that early weekday mornings and late weekend nights are when I get the best tips.
6. No Boss
When driving for Uber or Lyft, you are essentially working for yourself. You decide when you want to work, how hard you want to work, and your pay is completely dependent on you. You’ll never have to report to anyone or have a boss yell or even talk to you about your performance. This can be a blessing and a curse, but you are essentially your own boss, so learn to motivate yourself!
7. Freedom to Pursue Your Career
If you are like many of the Lyft and Uber drivers, you might have something else that you are trying to pursue. For me, it’s acting. For many others, it’s being an artist, a musician, or an entrepreneur. Maybe it’s just a passion that you have. Whatever it may be, driving for Uber or Lyft is a great way to allow yourself to pursue the career of your choice. For me, driving for Lyft gives me freedom to go on auditions and work on set whenever I want. I don’t have to call out for work, I just stop working and then turn on my app afterward.
This one goes hand in hand with how easy it is to be a driver. You can play your own music, wear whatever you want, eat/drink whatever you want, and be as comfortable as you wanting your own car. When I drive late at night, I typically get a cup of coffee that I sip on throughout my night. I actually love gas station coffee, so I usually grab one for about a dollar and it helps me stay focused and alert throughout my night.
Uber and Lyft have great bonuses that they offer their drivers. Lyft has a Power Driver Bonus that rewards drivers for the number of rides they give throughout the week. Complete 135 rides in a week and you’ll get an extra $320 (that’s around $1000 total). Uber has similar bonuses, so make sure to try out both services and see which bonuses you like better!
10. Work Anywhere
One of the greatest benefits about working for a company like Uber and Lyft is that it’s available almost anywhere. If you want to take a trip to another state, you can work for Uber and Lyft while you’re there. Most jobs won’t allow you to work remotely, but for Uber or Lyft, you just turn on the app and start earning money!
